Alongside a whole arsenal of cards in the Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion, Hearthstone received a brand new adventure that comes completely free for all players. The adventure consists of three wings, each of which offers three boss battles.

How to Beat The Lich King in Hearthstone: Knights of the Frozen Throne

The first boss you will encounter in the Prologue is The Lich King himself. In this case you don't get to choose your deck, but you will be provided with the pre-constructed one.

The match-up consists of two segments, the first of which you will lose no matter what. But don’t hit the Concede button yet. The Lich King will transform your hero into a Death Knight form, and in this case your vanilla Jaina will become Frost Lich Jaina.

In the second part of the match-up you will face Tirion and his army of horrible minions. This battle will be extremely easy to win -- just play on curve and you will get there soon.

In the end you will be rewarded with a random free Death Knight hero card.

How to Beat Lord Marrowgar in Hearthstone: Knights of the Frozen Throne

The first boss of the Lower Citadel is Lord Marrowgar, who has a neat hero power that heals him to full health each turn. This means that you can’t kill him gradually, but you must come up with an OTK (one-turn kill) combo deck.

There are a couple of types of decks you can use in this battle:

OTK Priest

First, use Thoughsteal to copy Lord Marrowgar’s Bone Spike minions that deal 15 points of damage to the enemy hero. Then, use Divine Spirit to double the minion’s health, and Inner Fire to make its attack equal to its health. In this way you will finish Marrowgar in one turn.

The Priest deck is a budget variant of the OTK deck. But if you have enough dust, you can craft the massive Jade Druid deck that will let you create an army of huge minions in one turn. In this way you can have over 30 damage on board and easily finish Marrowgar.

How to Beat Deathbringer Saurfang in Hearthstone: Knights of the Frozen Throne

Deathbringer Saurfang has a peculiar passive ability that protects him from any type of damage except one -- the damage from the weapons.

As you know, the class with the largest number of weapons in Hearthstone is Warrior -- so this is the best hero you can choose to play against Saurfang.

Your deck must consist of all the available Warrior weapons, excluding Fool’s Bane that can’t deal damage to heroes. Also, consider minions and spells that buff your weapons, such as Upgrade!, Heroic Strike, Bloodsail Cultist, Naga Corsair, Spiteful Smith, and others.

How to Beat Lady Deathwhisper in Hearthstone: Knights of the Frozen Throne

The final boss is quite tricky and will be hard to beat, if your deck will not be able to effectively heal its minions. The problem is that Lady Deathwhisper’s hero power sets the health of all enemy minions to 1, which makes them extremely vulnerable.

At the same she has 30 health and 90 armor that requires 120 points of damage in total to kill her. Sounds challenging, isn’t it? But don't worry, you will have a helping hand in this fight. There is another minion on board at your side -- Valithria Deathspeaker, a dragon with 30 attack and 5 health.

Unfortunately, this powerful dragon can’t attack unless it is fully healed. If you remember Lady Deathwhisper constantly deals damage to all enemy minions, so you need to find a way to heal Valithria each turn for it to be able to attack for 30 damage.

The only hero in Hearthstone that is capable of doing this is Priest. Here’s the decklist you can use:

They are similar to the Adventure game mode, but reward card packs rather than specific, otherwise unobtainable cards, and are primarily meant to develop an Expansion's lore and narrative.

The Dalaran Heist[editedit source]

Main article: The Dalaran Heist

Part of Rise of Shadows, released May 16, 2019.

The League of E.V.I.L. is trying to steal the city of Dalaran, and enlists a host of lackeys to overthrow it. This mode combines the Dungeon Run-style Missions with many of the elements from Adventures. Dalaran Heist is divided into 5 wings, each with their own twists. Players use special representatives of the original 9 classes, which each have two additional hero powers that can be unlocked by performing certain tasks, as well as unlockable starting decks. The mode has both normal and heroic difficulties. It also introduced Bartender Bob, who lets the player fine tune their deck by hiring and firing minions and providing permanent buffs. It was also the first set of Missions to cost Gold or real money. Clearing all five wings on normal or heroic rewards the Prize of Shadows and Got Away With It! card backs respectively.

Tombs of Terror[editedit source]

Part of Saviors of Uldum, released September 17, 2019.

After stealing Dalaran, the League of EVIL unleashed the Plague Lords across Uldum, and the League of Explorers have returned to stop them. This Mission is similar to the Dalaran Heist, and features four wings and an unlockable final boss. Players choose between one of the four explorers, who all combine two classes in one, leaving only Warlock unrepresented of the original 9. Each explorer starts with a Signature Treasure, and different options can be unlocked as well as alternative hero powers. All final bosses feature a whopping 300 Health and three phases, but progress made on them is kept if they defeat you. Defeating Tekahn in normal or heroic rewards the Titanic Tasks and Tomb Explorer card backs respectively.

Demon Hunter Prologue[editedit source]

The Demon Hunter Prologue explains the origins of Illidan Stormrage and the Demon Hunter class. The prologue takes place roughly ten thousand years ago, telling the story of Illidan during the War of the Ancients from his own perspective. Upon completion, this solo adventure unlocks all demon hunter Basic cards and the entire Demon Hunter Initiate set.

The following Missions have rotated into Wild format, and become playable after a player has opened their first pack of the respective card set.

Knights of the Frozen Throne[editedit source]

Knights of the Frozen Throne is the first Hearthstone expansion to include Missions, released August 10, 2017.

The Missions see the player ascend through the dreaded Icecrown Citadel, home to the Lich King and his Undead Scourge. The Missions feature a total of 8 bosses, spread across three wings and an introductory Prologue. Completing the Prologue rewards a random Knights of the Frozen Thronehero card, while completing every subsequent wing rewards 1 Knights of the Frozen Throne card pack each. Defeating the final boss encounter, The Lich King, with all 9 original classes rewards the Arthas Menethilalternatepaladinhero.

Dungeon Run[editedit source]

Dungeon Run first of the new style of Missions as part of Kobolds & Catacombs, released December 7, 2017.

This mode has the player venture through the catacombs, a vast underground world of tunnels dug out by kobolds and other subterranean creatures. Dungeon Run features a large, randomized pool of bosses, ensuring every playthrough is a little different. Rather than build their own decks, players start with a small number of cards and collect more cards after each won encounter. They also collect treasures, which are extremely powerful cards that offer either a Passive benefit or are added to the deck. Be warned though - if the player is defeated, their deck is lost and they have to start all over again. Successfully defeating 8 bosses in one run with all 9 origin classes rewards the Candle King card back.

Monster Hunt[editedit source]

Part of The Witchwood, released April 26, 2018.

Four champions must brave the corrupted Blackwald and defeat the source of the evil over Gilneas. Monster Hunt follows a similar formula to the Dungeon Run, but replaces the original classes with four custom classes (The Tracker, The Cannoneer, The Houndmaster, and The Time-Tinker) that have their own hero powers and specially-tailored treasures. Defeating each of the characters' Nemesis unlocks the final fight against Hagatha the Witch, and defeating her rewards the Monster Hunt card back.

Puzzle Lab[editedit source]

Part of The Boomsday Project, released August 21, 2018.

Players are invited to join Boom Labs, helping the scientists complete their projects and eventually stopping Dr. Boom's nebulous evil scheme. This mode offers a completely unique type of gameplay. Rather than fight bosses, players must solve a series of increasingly-difficult puzzles. The Puzzle Lab tests the player's logic, math abilities, as well as their knowledge of how Hearthstone functions as a game. Completing every puzzle rewards the Boomsday! card back.

Rumble Run[editedit source]

Part of Rastakhan's Rumble, released December 13, 2018.

Players take the role of Rikkar, a rookie brawler from the Darkspear tribe who challenges every single person in the arena to battle. This mode is a return to the Dungeon Run style of Mission, but adds a few twists. Each player and their opponent have a Shrine, which provides a powerful effect and always returns to the field shortly after being destroyed. Completing a run rewards the Rumble Runner card back.

History and design[editedit source]

Missions were first announced in a Year of the Mammoth announcement blog post on the official site, where the Hearthstone team explained that they would be changing the previous Hearthstone release cycle of alternating between Expansion and Adventure releases to instead releasing three Expansions a year, and that 'optional single-player missions' would be included in each release to help develop the expansions' lore and narrative. It was also mentioned that the team would be taking their 'first step' into this new design with the second expansion of 2017, which was later announced as Knights of the Frozen Throne:

'Looking back, we learned a lot in 2016 with the introduction of the Year of the Kraken. One of the things we’d like to put additional focus on for the Year of the Mammoth is having additional deck-building options and deck variety in Hearthstone. To help give players additional tools and options to accomplish this, we are changing up the way we handle our release cycle. Previously, a Hearthstone Year alternated between Expansions and Adventures.
For the Year of the Mammoth, our release cycle will include a ~130 card expansion at the start of the year, a ~130 card expansion in the middle of the year, and another ~130 card expansion at the end of the year.
Why the change of release cycle?
At their core, Adventures paint colorful and thematic stories about the Hearthstone universe. Imagine being able to learn about the history and lore behind each of our sets inside the game in a similar way! Defining who the Jade Lotus are through a series of battles between the Mean Streets of Gadgetzan families would have been a great way to supplement the overall Gadgetzan story arc. That concept is something we would like to do more of in future sets: Take the storytelling and cool missions of Adventures, and combine them with the card pools of expansions.
Cards will be acquired via packs like other expansions in the past; additionally, each release will include optional single-player missions that will help develop the expansions’ thematic narratives and offer fun challenges.
We’d like to continue being flexible and refine the way we roll out content so it’s more enjoyable for all of our players. The second expansion of 2017 will be our first step into this new design, and we plan on building on this concept over time. Additional details about our free single player content will come at a later time.'[1]

In an IGNKnights of the Frozen Throne interview with Dave Kosak and Jerry Mascho, Kosak elaborated further on the design intent of Missions as opposed to Adventures:

IGN: How has the shift from missions being linked to adventures – and a smaller set of cards, to being linked to a full expansion set changed your opportunities for storytelling? For instance, when Mean Streets [of Gadgetzan] came out, I was like “man, I’d love to see some more story content around this!
Dave Kosak: Right! That’s exactly how we felt about Mean Streets. We had these great great characters, and you kind of had the quest that you could do when the expansion launched to sort of introduce the characters, but you really didn’t get to interact with them in a way that was narrative. And this gives us an opportunity to do that. And yeah, going forward, we’re excited about that. It’ll be full 135 card sets, as well as this opportunity to tell a little bit of story with the missions. And the goal of missions now, it kind of changes, because you’re not gating cards behind the content. Now it’s really about getting people excited about the expansion, getting people interacting with the new cards in a new way, introducing these characters to players, that’s important. It’s especially important here because Hearthstone players might not have played Warcraft 3 or World of Warcraft, they might not know who the Lich King is yet. We’ve got to really establish who the Lich King is and that can be fun, because we kind of give a Hearthstone take on it.[2]
